Does an Air Con Need Re-gassing?

By Kyle Rafter - May 13, 2026

There is no need for air conditioner re-gassing under normal conditions, if installed correctly. That is because there is no such thing as stale gas or expired gas in a home air conditioner. Gas is sealed inside the system and is designed to last for the entire life of the unit.

If an air conditioner ever needs re-gassing, it means the gas has been lost due to a fault, most commonly a leak. In these cases, the underlying issue should always be identified and repaired by a qualified air conditioning technician before any gas is replaced.

How long does air conditioner gas last?

In a properly installed and well-maintained system, the air conditioner gas, also known as refrigerant, should last for the entire lifespan of the air conditioner. This is because refrigerant circulates in a sealed loop and is not consumed during normal operation.

Does aircon gas run out?

You will not need to refill air conditioner gas because it does not run out. When an air conditioner stops heating or cooling effectively, it is common to blame the gas. However, performance issues are more often linked to clogged filters, restricted airflow, incorrect mode settings or general system faults. While refrigerant leaks can occur, they are typically the result of installation problems, damaged piping or long-term wear rather than normal use.

How to check for a gas leak in an AC

Checking for a gas leak in an air conditioner should always be handled by a licensed technician. The warning signs to look out for and common AC leak symptoms include:

  • Reduced cooling or heating performance, the system taking longer than usual to reach the set temperature or warm air blowing when it should be cool.

  • You may also notice hissing sounds near the indoor or outdoor unit, ice forming on the pipes or coils or energy bills that are higher than normal.

If you suspect a leak, don’t attempt to fix it yourself. Re-gassing a home air conditioner requires specialist equipment and certification. The safest step is to book a professional air conditioning service so the leak can be accurately located and properly repaired before any refrigerant is replaced.
